OIN Publishing is happy to offer Land Shadows and its associated curriculum for consideration in One Book One Community programs and classroom adoption. One difficulty faced by One Book committees is increasing fees for author appearances. Many large publishers now charge upwards of $7,000 plus expenses for a single author appearance. Authors frequently wish to appear at schools and other community organizations that are near and dear to their hearts. Favorite bookstores. Community colleges. And publishers insist on getting their cut. If the school can't pay? The author may be prohibited from appearing. This practice prices out marginalized communities that may benefit the most from an author visit. I can still remember author Joan Lowery Nixon visiting my elementary school, something that would be out of reach for many schools today.

Educational equity is at the heart of what we do. When the OIN board deliberated over what a fair author deal looks like, we consciously avoided any language in our publishing contracts that claims ownership over author appearances, book signings, or film + TV rights for that matter. We are content with the royalties we make from copies sold as a result of author appearances. OIN authors are allowed to give of their time any way they wish, and make 100% of the proceeds of their speaker fees. We are happy to negotiate on behalf of those authors, and arrange appearances; but we do not charge for this service.
